As KO Law Firm continues to celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2023, we’re proud to celebrate our growing practice and our founding principles that have endured over the last two decades.
Providing superior client service at a better value
KO was founded in 2003 by former big law attorneys on the philosophy that a different approach to legal practice management delivers better value and results to clients and a superior work environment for team members. The firm has stayed true to its founding principles over the last two decades, particularly with its team, culture, and areas of expertise.
Attracting and retaining top talent and experienced attorneys
From the start, KO has hired attorneys with expertise, experience, and training from big law firms and large corporate in-house departments and offered better work-life integration, without the high-pressure culture or need to maximize billable hours. Today, the team includes more than 30 attorneys as well as a dozen paralegals and operations staff.
“KO has been committed to doing things differently since day one, and that has enabled us to hire and retain a team of top-notch attorneys, paralegals and operations staff, so that we can take on dynamic clients and build strategic, long-term relationships with them,” says one of KO’s founding partners Ben Oelsner.
Notable local, regional, and national clients
From its inception, the firm has intentionally focused on select practice areas served by highly skilled attorneys, rather than expanding its services into a full-service law firm. KO now serves three practice areas: (1) corporate and transactional; (2) operational, commercial, and technology contracts; and (3) data privacy and security.
KO’s client roster includes notable local, regional, and national businesses as well as top Colorado startups that are regularly recognized on lists of the state’s fastest-growing companies, startups to watch, and best places to work. KO specializes in serving many industries, including software and SaaS, life sciences, food, beverage and consumer goods, professional services, energy, retail and manufacturing, ecommerce and internet.
Providing attractive benefits and unique perks
The Denver- and Boulder-based firm provides significant benefits and perks for its employees and shareholders, including 100% paid health insurance premiums for employees, unlimited PTO, paid parental leave, paid sabbaticals, remote work options, parking, profit sharing, onsite fitness options, as well as a retirement program and charitable giving program with firm matching contributions. One of the most unique perks – especially in the legal industry – is a two-month paid sabbatical available to anyone who’s been with the firm for at least seven years (and every seven years thereafter). According to the Society for Human Resource Management, only 5% of companies offer paid sabbaticals. Numerous team members across a variety of roles have taken advantage of this benefit in recent years, and several have upcoming sabbaticals planned.
Staying true to our founding principles and culture
“While the firm has grown significantly, we have intentionally maintained a strong focus on our founding principles and culture,” said KO Managing Partner Jon Taylor. “Today, we’re proud to have a team of highly skilled and tenured attorneys and staff who support our growing, dynamic client roster and enjoy their time outside of work. Clients consistently tell us that they appreciate working with our team because we’re passionate and energized about driving great results for their businesses.”
